Poverty in India-A Malady of Years

The history of India is replete with tales of over-pouring prosperity and brilliant riches. They tell us of how the Taj Mahal once stood embellished with precious stones and diamonds, and how the rich people fed their cattle dry fruits for scented meat. As we move forward into our study of India’s past, we learn how all these excesses eventually started to dwindle away. We are told how the foreign invaders robbed us of all our materialistic glory, and infested the country with the malady of poverty. When the British colonial rule finally ended in 1947, more than 70 percent of our population was facing abject financial hardships. The poor people were living in obscenely pitiable conditions. It was around this time that poverty in India emerged as major ache in the nation’s heart.

Swachh Bharat:A vision of Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhiji dwelt on cleanliness and good habits and pointed out its close relationship to good health. No one should spit or clean his nose on the streets. In some cases the sputum is so harmful that the germs infect others. In some countries spitting on the road is a criminal offence. Those who spit after chewing betel leaves and tobacco have no consideration for the feelings of others. Spittle, mucus from the nose, etc, should also be covered with earth.

Eve Teasing in India: The Reason Behind the Attacks on Women?

Let’s remember that what we really need to battle is society’s mindset towards women. And yes, we surely need to work on measures that ensure a woman’s safety in all spheres by taking all practical steps necessary – be it through fixing CCTV cameras in public spaces and campuses or lighting up dark alleys or by reporting stalkers and eve-teasers. We do need to increase safety awareness among people. We need to educate children, both girls and boys on safety. But more importantly, let’s teach them to respect the other. Teaching young boys to respect girls at home and at school will go a long way in ensuring a safe world. Teach them to challenge injustice towards women. Teach them to challenge age-old mindsets that dictate that a woman stays safe when she is locked up somewhere!

Is skin colour only parameter to judge anyone’s beauty ?

We can either accept the definition of beauty presented to us, and continue to be dissatisfied with our appearances and critical of those around us. Or, we can choose to see the beauty that exists around us. We can choose to see beauty in confidence and smiles. But one must remember, that beauty is not the ultimate goal. Colorism is not only a problem because it values one shade of skin over others, it promotes the idea that people, and women in particular, should base their self worth in their physical appearance.
Health, knowledge and kindness or humanity are far better parameters on which to measure self worth. So, it seems to me that if we want to be more satisfied with ourselves and self confident, there is a twofold task before us. We must redefine what beauty is to us, to include more than unattainable standards, and simultaneously recognise that our worth does not lie in our physical appearances.

If a man had to steal food out of hunger, I believe; it is we as a society which has failed

If a man had to steal food out of hunger, I believe; it is we as a society which has failed. It is time we turn around and pay attention to the needs of those around us……to a friend, a neighbor, a colleague who is in need of your support. Let us not be deaf to the silent cries around us everyday.
May not the colors of pleasure blind our eyes from the needs of our neighbors. May not our mouths be dumbfounded to raise voice against the injustice and oppression around us.
